We have good news. Thanks to the joint efforts of the Ministerial Alliance, First Baptist Church, Hamilton County Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Coalition and Concerned Citizens of Jasper, the Jasper City Council did not vote to pass the proposed ordinances that would have removed the restricted areas for Alcohol Sales and the change in hours that would have allowed sales of alcohol 7 days a week and one hour later every day.

The Gulf County Substance Abuse Coalition enjoyed a record turnout at its Sept. 29 meeting at the Gulf Coast Community College Gulf/Franklin Center. The standing-room-only crowd, comprised of parents, educators, community leaders and at least two dozen teenagers, signaled a turning point for the coalition, which has not received adequate community support since its founding over a year ago.

CBS4 I-Team investigator Laurie Stein's exclusive hidden camera investigation revealed why police are so worried about these powerful potions, including a fruit-flavored drink called "Sparks" sold by the Miller Brewing Company.

Law enforcement officers hit the streets over the weekend for a cooperative operation targeting retail businesses selling alcohol to underage persons. The Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco and local law enforcement agencies announced the results of Project Graduation -"Reducing Underage Drinking" today in the Orange County Administration Bldg. 201 S. Rosalind Avenue. The sting operation included 221 compliance checks and 28 arrests.

Underage drinking is a reality in St. Johns County and one that needs to be addressed by the community and parents, agreed a panel of community leaders, experts and one teenager Monday evening. "Parents need to step up. Your job is not to be their buddy," Circuit Court Judge Clyde Wolfe told an audience of about 100 during a community discussion presented by the PACT Prevention Coalition of St. Johns County. St. Augustine High School senior Shane McWilliams called teenage drinking a "huge, huge problem, bigger than any other problem I see (at school)."

16.5% of middle and high school children were binge drinking and that 57.8% had used alcohol on at least one occasion during their lifetime. The Safe Climate Coalition (SCC), Lake County's substance abuse prevention coalition and Lake County Shared Services Network (LCSSN) did not like these numbers. As a result, they decided in the fall of 2007 that they needed to go forward in introducing a keg registration ordinance to the Lake County Board of County Commissioners.
